Capsular contracture is an immune system response to foreign materials in the human body and is
predominantly associated with complications from breast augmentation. Capsular contracture can often be
painful and always requires additional surgery to replace the affected implant. It has been hypothesized that
bacterial biofilms on breast implants may cause chronic inflammation leading to capsular contracture. The
industry partner Nick Carr, Inc. seeks to improve the preventative measures employed to inhibit post-operative
microbial colonization through a greater understanding of the diversity and function of the bacteria responsible,
and the interaction of the colony at the implant surface. This research seeks to provide a complete
identification of the colonizing bacteria associated with capsular contracture and their diverse functions using
modern microbial techniques. Information from this study can be expanded to help prevent capsular contracture
from other medical procedures, including those involving artificial joint prosthetics. The industry partner will
leverage this information to help reduce the occurrence and severity of capsular contracture across Canada.
