Friction stir welding of fuel containers

This Engage grant will focus on the fabrication of aluminium-based vessels using friction stir welding. The processing parameters will be developed to join aluminium structures for fuel containers, and subsequently verify the integrity of prototype components. This will be the first study of the application of this technology for AA6000 series aluminium vessels, and so feasibility of joining these materials by friction stir welding must be established in order to pursue the technology at an industrial scale. This will involve the design and testing of a suitable welding tools and welding parameters to produce lap welds in thin sections. The work will have broader range applicability to both the automotive and aerospace industry, and will be the basis for establishing more general specifications for this joining technology.
