This project entitled "Arc weld efficiency database and modeling tools" will be led by the University of Waterloo (UW) Centre for Advanced Materials Joining (CAMJ) to develop engineering tools and fundamental knowledge regarding welding, to benefit welding engineers and researchers across Canada. In collaboration with the Canadian Welding Association (CWA), two key issues for both industry and researchers will be addressed: (1) insufficient data regarding weld thermal efficiency, and (2) limited engineering tools to support welding procedure development. To tackle these issues, researchers will conduct efficiency measurements of modern gas metal arc welding (GMAW) processes using advanced waveforms using equipment custom designed at UW. The measurements will relate total welding arc energy input and cooling rate using numerical models for several common welding processes. This will build a database of efficiency values that engineers can use in order to predict cooling rates and simplify development of welding procedures in the field. The efficiency measurements will be used to develop a set of tools which combine experimental and numerical simulation data into a set of tables and engineering guidelines which provide the expected cooling rates, weld penetration, and whether the resulting joint may be excessively brittle and potentially require additional mechanical testing. The new knowledge and tools will be delivered to the members of CWA in the industrial and education sectors, in order to achieve an effective utilization of the research results. These end-users will have access to new tools which advance their welding knowledge and elevate the status of Canada as a leader in welding technology.
