Frontier Power Systems is a small wind engineering company based in Prince Edward Island. They specialize in small wind energy and wind-diesel projects with an emphasis on remote power generation in isolated communities. They are presently looking to develop a new three-bladed wind turbine rotor that will yield sufficient production for class IV (i.e. low wind speed) sites while having the structural resistance to withstand class II conditions. Current industry practice is to design wind-class specific turbines. This however is not a competitive option for the small wind market. Frontier Power Systems seeks an innovative solution to the diversity of operating conditions in which they operate. More specifically, they are interested in developing a variable-length blade; a technologically challenging solution that has yet to be commercialized. The research team at ÉTS has considerable experience in the design of small wind turbine rotors and this Engage grant will be used to apply their expertise to this company-specific problem. The primary costs are related to salary and estimated at $25,000. The total amount requested from NSERC is $25,000.
