Integration of intermittent, low-cost wind and solar energy is key to address global energy and environmental concerns towards a more sustainable energy future. With large penetration of solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power, integration of these intermittent sources can be addressed, in part, by using appropriately sized battery energy storage system (BESS) to smooth intermittency. The proposed project is an important component of the technology required to integrate additional solar PV more easily into today's electric grids. The objective of this project is developing statistical techniques to size BESS for smoothing higher frequencies solar PV systems output power based on a solar weather forecast. The developed algorithm can be used by utilities to develop advanced controller to integrate renewable energy by optimally smoothing high-frequency intermittent solar PV generation in real-time. The outcome of this project may benefit Canada by increasing clean energy jobs to work on projects abroad as many utilities do not have internal resources to establish successful solar integration projects. The proposed project supports Manitoba Hydro's desire to evaluate BESS installed in proximity to solar PV systems, and to promote electricity generation from intermittent renewable energy sources.
