英文摘要
Although minerals weather naturally, this process can be significantly accelerated during mining activities. As rocks containing sulfur-bearing minerals weather, acidic metal-rich runoff can be produced. This represents a significant concern in terms of downstream water quality, the growth and reproduction of aquatic plants and animals as well as potential downstream corrosion. When present, carbonate rocks contribute to acid neutralization, limiting the downstream impact of sulfur-bearing minerals. However, in low sulfur, low carbonate systems, rocks containing calcium-rich feldspar play an important role in determining mine waste runoff chemistry. Further research is needed to study the neutralization potential and metal release from such minerals. This research offers the possibility to apply newly developed experimental capabilities at the University of British Columbia to this problem. In parallel, it potentially provides SRK Consulting with a faster and more cost-effective approach to carry out kinetic tests, providing a competitive edge over other competitors in their field.
