英文摘要
The cement industry releases 0.9 tons of carbon dioxide for every ton of cement they produce. Consequently, cement manufacturers are continuously looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint across the cement life cycle. By injecting carbon dioxide into concrete products CarbonCure Technologies, our industry partner, enhances product performance while producing green construction materials that sequester carbon dioxide thereby partially offsetting emissions. The carbonation of concrete products improves strength, reduces water absorption, improves resistance to salt, and improves freeze-thaw performance. Our previous research with CarbonCure Technologies attributed enhanced performance to the formation of carbonate nano-particles. This research collaboration will use high-resolution micro-imaging, mineral identification and quantification, and carbon isotope characterization to improve our understanding of the long term fate of nano-particles and carbon dioxide in cement products. The industry partner will employ these results to maximize carbon utilization and expand the process to include a broader range of cement products.
