英文摘要
This proposal is aimed to further develop and validate a new concept of materials design for enhancing the resistance of materials to cyclic crack initiation and growth in corrosive environments with a special emphasis of ferritic steels. The proposed work is built on the outcomes of long time research in the PI’s group supported by various organizations and the extensive and in-depth analyses of experimental results reported in the literature over past 40 years. The proposed work will be performed by 4 graduate students at the PhD/MSc levels. It is anticipated that the outcomes of the proposed research will yield enormous benefits to the industries where the fatigue-related failures of materials account for nearly 90% of the total failures. The benefits may come from the following two aspects:1) the increase of productivity due to less frequent failures, and 2) the savings of materials avoiding the quick exhaustion of natural resources. The work will not only provide a validation of a major materials design concept but also allow the direct application of the design concept for solving severe failure problems facing the industries. The current work will also establish a flatform for new materials development, which will substantially enhance the competitiveness of Canadian industries in world market and maintain Canadian strength in science and engineering.
