Recent advances in non-destructive imaging tools, such as CT and MRI, have resulted in the routine availability of quantitative 3-D images of a variety of objects such as humans, animals, biological specimens, insects, manufactured devices, core samples, archeological artifacts and agricultural products. While 3D images have traditionally had great value in diagnostic applications, these images are now more important than ever, because they have immediate utility in providing the boundary conditions for finite-element models, as well as computer-aided design (CAD) models for advanced additive manufacturing.
