Next generation wireless systems (Fifth generation (5G)) are being developed with the vision of heterogeneity in which a mobile user/device will be able to connect to multiple wireless networks. However, since the available bands in each node vary from location to location, and network to network, managing resources becomes particularly challenging in a multi-hop transmission scenario. Resource allocation and network selection in heterogeneous wireless access networks (HWAN), based on the cognitive capability of that network, fast and efficient vertical handoff mechanisms, and provisioning of QoS are some of the major research issues related to the development of HWANs.
