Interaction between interrelated computing devices has increased dramatically because of the continuous adoption of the 5G cellular network supporting IoT applications. End-user requirements are varying with different capabilities like proper response, optimal power cost, and QoS. Fog computing model emphasizes data access latency and geographical distribution for cloud resources. Edge computing transfers applications services, data and computing power from cloud data centers to closest points servicing end-user devices. The main weaknesses in these models are the type of management platforms, communication methods, and applications and services deployments including data update and consistency. Data and communication security, scalability, interface programmability, reliability, availability and serviceability are significant issues that challenge the development stages of the new IoT applications. Communication model and micro-services architecture between cloud component layers decouples between service components and makes task components as modular functionality. Micro-services must follow protocol standards that make resources access to public fast, safe and secure. As a result, a new enhanced cloud computing model has come up that combines edge and fog computing models leveraging from micro-services communicating between centralized resources embedded in cloud data centers and data sources of IoT embedded in edge and fog networks close to the end-user devices. The main challenges that must be investigated for the enhanced cloud computing paradigm are: 1.Network topology and its architecture, since existing dynamic software switches serve virtualized components. Cloud computing components change their location based on the cloud management system, which requires to make micro-services architecture and communication protocols agile and light as request and response model. 2.Resource and task management, which requires to identify user application demands and requirements to assign suitable resources to meet their expectations of latency, computation power, resource capacity, data size, and location. 3.Communication requests using micro-services must be coherent to data access security policies that can identify the tasks to run in the targeted servers with data or message contents reliability and trustiness. Workload deployment mechanisms need security management strategies to handle the users' applications reliability and availability, and privacy needs. This proposal attempts to address key research challenges related to the design and operation of efficient cross-layer resource management in the enhanced cloud computing paradigm, focusing on the user application demands that require micro-services satisfying user needs based on availability and in a trust-worthy architecture. The proposed research will be instrumental in balancing the resources and services within the cloud computing networks, including the end-user level.
