Cells have a number of stress response mechanisms used to maintain viability in response to endogenous and environmental challenges. Examples include the High Osmolarity Glycerol (HOG) MAPK pathway in yeast (partially regulated by the Sho1p plasma membrane osmosensor) which responds to osmotic stress, and the actions of the integral membrane ABC transporters, which maintain cellular homeostasis by transporting diverse compounds (e.g. drugs, toxic metabolites etc.) across biological membranes. A better understanding of these responses is essential to expanding our knowledge of the inner workings of the cell.
