This research program will address some key issues related to achieving and ensuring delivery of safe drinking water to consumers through a focus on practical risk assessment and risk management approaches. The most important health risk for humans posed by drinking water quality is that posed by microbial pathogens which cause millions of cases of waterborne disease, worldwide, every year. This health risk can only be reduced by adequate water treatment, particularly disinfection, but all known disinfection processes produce unwanted byproducts to some degree. The most practical and cost effective disinfection processes for systems with limited resources are those based on chlorine, making chlorination disinfection byproducts a particular concern. Exploration, elaboration and development of evidence regarding human health risks posed by disinfection byproducts is a major element of the proposed research program.
