Trace levels of several contaminants in drinking water have known or suspected human health effects, and progress in identifying means to minimize or eliminate their occurrence is affected by the necessity to pre-concentrate them and transfer them into appropriate solvents such that they can be detected. Solid phase extraction is an effective pre-concentration procedure for this purpose. However, when performed manually, it requires long periods of analysts' time per sample and can be subject to variabilities from the differing experience and capabilities of each analyst.
