We wish to acquire a drilling system to recover ice cores from glaciers and icefields in western and Arctic Canada. The requested system consists of an ice core barrel, cutter, cable, winch, power supply, thermal heater to melt the perimeter of the bore hole, control system hardware and software, and ice core boxes for storage and transport. Ice cores provide detailed records of past climate and atmospheric conditions, providing a longterm context for recent change. In addition to environmental reconstructions, ice cores contain information about glacier mass balance and dynamics, such as snow accumulation and melt rates, vertical flow rates, meltwater storage and retention, and the process of densification from snow to glacier ice.
