The HARvEST project will prepare a device for commercialization that was developed at McMaster University and that has already been experimentally tested. The prototype, named the Pizza Oven Waste Energy Recovery (POWER) system, repurposes wasted thermal energy from a conventional pizza oven's exhaust gases to generate electricity that provides heating for hot water tanks and HVAC units. The system also conserves energy by reducing natural gas consumption through an exhaust flow control mechanism. As a self-powered device, it has the added benefit of continuing to operate even during a power outage. In sum, the technology conserves fuel, reduces harmful emissions, and decreases operating costs.
