With the increasing penetration of wind power generation in today's power systems, the analysis of wind turbine generator (WTG)'s short circuit current contribution is very important for the proper power system design and protection. Currently the most popular industrial software for power system analysis is PSS/E. However, due to the computation requirements for bulk electric system analysis, PSS/E calculates fault current based on simplified equivalent circuit. This causes a concern on the short circuit analysis accuracy under various working conditions of WTGs. In this Engage project, CF Power has approached the University to research on the modeling methods for WTGs for short circuit analysis and evaluate and improve the accuracy of generic WTG models in PSS/E. Successful completion of the project will benefit the industry partner by improving their engineering service capabilities. The project will also benefit Canadian utility companies to ensure large-scale development of wind power with minimum impact on power systems.
