Nowadays, high power medium voltage drives are becoming more important in industry to reduce energy losses and increase productivities for the operating of pumps, fans, traction motors, etc. These high power drives typically suffer harmonics, resonance and common mode voltage during their operations, which will introduce additional stress and losses on the drives and the motors. Traditional approach to deal with these problems is through passive filtering and damping which increase the cost, size and weight of a drive system.
In this Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) program, we propose to research and develop novel control and pulse-width-modulation (PWM) strategies to mitigate the electrical resonance and control the common mode voltage in a high power current source based drive system. The proposed PWM and control strategies are expected to effectively address the above mentioned problem, improve the overall efficiency and conserve energy, while without involving additional hardware costs in a drive system.
