The key objective of this project is to develop a rapid water quality monitoring device that can be integrated with commercially available water treatment units. In particular, the key milestones for the project would be: (i) To design a device that could take 100 mL of water (as per US EPA requirement), and concentrate and detect E. coli simultaneously as an integrated system based on the enzymatic substrate chemistry developed for Mobile Water Kit (MWK); (ii) To fabricate the device; (iii) To explore possible mechanisms to integrate the device with the water treatment units for real-time monitoring of water quality with the industry partner. The simultaneous concentration and detection of E. coli in contaminated water samples can be achieved by using a custom designed plunger-tube assembly with a built-in filter (0.45 µm pore size).
