英文摘要
Foaming in bioreactors is a widespread problem in the pharmaceutical industry that is currently addressed with chemical antifoam reagents. The main disadvantages of using such reagents are that they i) cause mass transfer limitations in upstream operations, ii) create the need for extra steps in the subsequent purification processes, iii) cause cell lysis which in turn triggers the release of proteins/enzymes that further exacerbate foaming and reduce catalytic activity and iv) render the fermentation system less homogeneous. Thus, the pharmaceutical industry has a large incentive to mitigate foaming by novel non-chemical means.
