Currently, heavy lifts in industrial projects are performed by large capacity mobile cranes. Over the years, the mobile crane supporting design has been overdesigned due to the lack of reference data regarding the actual loads transferred to the ground through crane mats. In 2015, the University of Alberta (U of A) research team in collaboration with PCL Industrial Management Inc. completed a large scale on-site investigation to measure actual reactions under outrigger supports of a rough-terrain crane. The measured data and the stresses predicted by the finite element analysis (FEA) were used to validate the company's current design method for the crane outrigger supports.
