Commonly, low level nuclear waste like resins, filters, etc., is solidified with cement, packaged in containers; and then stored in a deep geologic repository (DGR). Waste containers must have long-term isolation without future maintenance. Such structures may be subjected to complex load histories such as static pressure and/or accidental impact loads resulting from heavy objects falling during waste packaging operation or during transportation of waste containments to DGR. Waste containers are typically made of reinforced high-density concrete that is lined inside and outside with steel plates. The development of a new efficient lighter UHP-FRC nuclear waste containment for nuclear waste for storage is the main research objective of this project.
