In Canada, the use of timber in construction has been largely limited to low-value commodity products used in residential light-frame construction. There is a high demand for research to develop value-added applications for wood and their related products such as wood connection systems to: i) maximize the benefits from sustainably harvesting Canada's abundant forests in the mass timber market; ii) generally reduce the carbon footprint of buildings through the use of more sustainable materials; and iii) expand the use of the sustainable material wood beyond traditional residential construction and look into new markets such as tall wood buildings and the application of mass timber products.
