A smart (adaptive) antenna system is a group of antennas which can re-shape their radiation pattern in response to the changes in the wireless channel. Adaptive antenna has applications in both wireless networks and point-to-point wireless communications. The global smart antenna market is projected to reach US$30.1 Billion by 2023. The channel capacity (maximum possible data rate) in the modern wireless networks are limited by the level of wireless interference. Therefore, it is important to avoid transmission/reception of unwanted signals to/from unwanted directions. Adaptive antennas are able to change their radiation pattern to decrease interference and increase the level of received signal, and consequently maximizing wireless networks through-puts. Adaptive antennas therefore, are considered to be an integral part of the emerging 5G wireless standards/systems. The University of Waterloo has developed a novel retro-directive phased array antenna architecture. Due to its inventive hardware design and circuitry, the transmitter and receiver radiation beams are always aligned (locked) to each other and therefore, point toward the desired direction. The system does not require characterization or calibration and as a results, it can easily handle imperfections in its electronic components and circuitry. This innovative antenna system neither requires calibration nor contains any moving parts thus its response to beam direction change is fast and smooth. The new technology is easy to install, upgrade and maintain and enables new footprint implementation possibilities. This new technology offers significant benefits in a vast range of applications ranging from satellite communication to vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and the Internet of Things (IOT). As part of this Market Assessment grant, we will perform a thorough market analysis to identify the most suitable market opportunities along with technical, marketing and financial challenges associated with the application of the new technology in a particular market segment. A favorable market assessment result will further guide the development of the second generation prototype and help formulate the commercialization strategy and attract early stage investments.
