Canadian Hydro Components Ltd. (CHC) is designing an expanded series of standardised pit turbines to accommodate a broader range of hydro sites where the net head is not high enough to accommodate more traditional vertical axial-flow solutions. The purpose of this proposal is to address the flow analysis and optimization aspect of this project. The overall commercial goal of this pit turbine project is to expand CHCs export markets, to further diversify its product offerings, and to meet customer requests. A typical pit turbine utilizes a housing (the pit) containing a generator which is connected through a gearbox to an axial-flow turbine. The civil structure completes the hydraulic passage for each pit turbine. Generator dimensions are typically accommodated by using gearboxes to achieve smaller dimensioned (higher RPM) and lower cost generators. CHCs approach is to be able to eliminate the gearboxes for improved efficiency and reliability reasons. Most of CHCs existing clients in the US market do not want gearboxes
