We developed a novel method for mobile three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry (3D-PTV) that enables real-time flow measurements in large volumes of up to 50m³ using a single camera. A proprietary compact bubble generator produces soap bubbles of consistent size (~3cm diameter). The bubbles are then tracked by a high-resolution, high-speed camera. The reflection of ambient light in the bubbles is then captured by the camera. Based on the bubble-image size, the distance of the bubble from the camera can be derived. By equipping a drone with a bubble generator, a camera, as well as GPS and acceleration sensors, the position and velocity of each bubble can be tracked over time as the bubbles move away from the drone. The measurement system can be flown anywhere (e.g., in front of a wind turbine) and measure the flow in its vicinity. Quantities such as mean flow velocity or turbulence ratio can be derived and evaluated in real-time. Therefore, the 3D-PTV system will allow the wind turbine industry to identify suitable locations for wind plants. In particular, for onshore and small wind turbines, a significant performance increase can be expected.
