Many research environments exploit "lock-in" detection techniques to reduce noise (and data size) by removing unwanted spectral components from a signal of interest. We wish to use lock-in detection to interferometrically characterize the GHz-frequency mechanical modes of our micromechanical sensors, but there currently does not exist a commercially available lock-in detector for this range of frequencies. The state-of-the-art digital lock-in (Zurich Instruments UHFLI), which can measure signals at frequencies up to 600 MHz, costs more than $40,000 CAD (higher with options).
