This proposal is about controlling the interaction between surfaces and microbial cells. The goal is to develop an understanding of how different microbes interact with different types of complex surfaces. We hope this knowledge will ultimately allow us to create patterns on a substrate with regions where bacteria of interest bind and other areas where the bacteria does not bind. Having bacteria from a solution bind to a specific defined two-dimensional area on a substrate effectively concentrates initially low numbers of bacteria to allow them to be counted easily under a microscope: It would be like using a magnet to pull a needle from a haystack. This approach will assist in the development of diagnostics for microbes.
