The need for low cost building structures that maintain the basic conditions for healthy and comfortable living is increasing. Buildings on the other hand are responsible for more than 40 % of global energy consumption, and about third of the overall greenhouse gas emissions, in both developed and developing countries. Developing methods to reduce the cost of residential units while increasing energy efficiency measures has the potential to address the vast housing need and to alleviate the negative environmental impact of the built environment including the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The proposed project aims at demonstrating the impact of improving thermal properties of the building envelope (e.g. walls, roof, floor, and windows) on enhancing the energy performance of container-based housing, addressing, thus, both affordability and energy efficiency of the built environment.
