JANINE MAUZEROLL (MCGILL UNIVERSITY; PIN: 290829) Summary of Proposal In our research we use electrochemistry to study chemical and biological systems. We are interested in developing electrochemical based imaging methods that can be used as diagnostic tools. Our approach is multifaceted as it combines considerable expertise in biology, analytical chemistry, material sciences, and microscopy. In the coming grant period, we will capitalize on our progress over the past 6 years working on 3 interrelated systems. (I) We will develop a high-speed electroanalytical methodology to quantify and map material fluxes related to key redox processes occurring at surfaces with heterogeneous electrochemical activity (corroding alloys, cells). Such cutting-edge electrochemical imaging techniques are promising as diagnostic assays capable of tracking the activity of key cancer-related transporter pumps. (II) We will design smart drug delivery nanomaterials based on redox active phospholipids. Our goal is to explore the electrochemistry and self-assembly of this new class of phospholipids. (III) We will pursue development of analytical electrochemical imaging strategies to study multidrug resistance of patterned cancer cells. Our goal is to develop a quantitative multidrug resistance assay capable of evaluating the effects of anticancer agents encapsulated in the nanomaterials developed in II.
