项目摘要

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) represent a major effort by researchers, policymakers and industry professionals to enable vehicles to communicate critical information with other vehicles and surrounding infrastructure via wireless networks. Connected Vehicle (CV) technology is one of the latest and most innovative developments within ITS. The core of CV technology is wireless communication within a highly mobile environment. To improve mobility and safety, transportation management agencies across the world are developing and implementing ITS strategies. Although the concept of CV was introduced only a few years ago, it has evolved quickly; however, there is still a research gap in Canada regarding how CV technology can improve freeway mobility for all road users. The proposed research program aims to bridge the ITS gap in Canada by exploring innovative, scientifically sound, and technologically feasible solutions for enhancing CV technology in proactive freeway control. This augments the Government of Canada’s effort to develop and leverage a safe, innovative and sustainable, world-class, multi-modal transportation strategy that supports a growing economy and a high quality of life for Canadians. Over the past six years, with the support from a NSERC Discovery Grant and as planned in the original test bed proposal, the City of Edmonton and Alberta Transportation have been working closely with my research team on the Whitemud Drive and Anthony Henday Drive test beds. With the infrastructure funding support from CFI, Transport Canada, Alberta Transportation, and City of Edmonton, within the next three years, my research program will install 10 Roadside Equipment (RSE) units along Whitemud Drive, 8 RSE along Anthony Henday Drive, and put 200 vehicle On-Board Equipment (OBE) units into 200 vehicles to support this research program. With the potential support from the NSERC Discovery Grant for the next five years, several fundamental research topics will be explored: 1) How the new data generated from the CV technology will be used to enhance existing data sources; 2) The capabilities and potential, in terms of driver behaviour, roadways and vehicles, of DSRC-based On-Board Equipment (OBE) to determine whether OBE can be used to improve traffic data capturing and freeway management; 3) How existing smart devices and CV technology can work together as an advisory tool for travellers, through analytic modeling and analysis.
