This proposal is for the acquisition of a Gas Chromatograph with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) system (Item 1) as well as portable/mobile UV-Vis Spectrophotometers (Item 2) for fieldwork. The applicants’ research programmes to be directly supported by this grant are drinking water-related activities associated with disinfection by-product (DBP) formation/speciation, modelling, and control. Such activities are rapidly expanding (within the research theme as well as geographically), thereby increasing the importance of such analytical equipment. The requested equipment will ensure higher analytical efficiency and quality of DBPs through a cost-beneficial approach when investigating their presence in drinking water. It will also enhance the collaboration between the researchers of the two universities (both located in Quebec City) concerning water research. The requested equipment is complementary of past instrumentation grants and will strategically complete our laboratory infrastructure for innovative research in disinfection by-products (substitute for DBPs) in drinking water. The acquisition of these equipment will allow us to significantly improve our capacity for drinking water research and enhance the training opportunities of our HQP to work with emerging techniques and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The research programmes supported by the requested equipment will facilitate the direct participation of a significant number of HQPs (currently at 25, but expected to increase). The diverse, vibrant and dynamic team assembled for this project will provide HQPs with a stimulating peer-to-peer learning environment.
