Energy recovery ventilators (ERV) save energy while bringing more fresh air into buildings. ERV's using vapor permeable membranes have great promise but are relatively new; the impact of fouling on their long-term performance is unknown. The ERV components are evolving rapidly (new membrane materials, new flow geometries). dPoint Technologies, a global leader in ERV production, requires fundamental data and design models capable of linking materials (including the effect of membrane degradation) and flow geometry to overall core performance. In the proposed work, a fast computational tool will be developed to determine the overall effectiveness of an ERV core given information about local heat and mass transfer coefficients. Also, this work will provide fundamental new measurements are needed of membrane properties and the influence of flow passage design on local heat and mass transfer.
