In collaboration with LANXESS, we have had considerable success designing new catalysts for the modification of synthetic rubbers over the past 6 years. In the regard, we have developed, evaluated, patented and published a series of catalyst for hydrogenation, metathesis and polymerization. Based on these successes we now plan to develop a hydrogenation catalysts for the direct conversion of latex rubbers to hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene rubbers (HNBR). These materials are used in a wide variety of products from tires and gaskets to running-shoes and medical devices. The development of this new production technology will dramatically reduce both the production cost and its environmental impact and would position LANXESS as a world leader in production technology. The impact of such a Canadian solution to a world-wide production issue would impact positively on the Canadian economy with commercialization by LANXESS but in other areas of application via a new spin-off company that would commercialize the revolutionary technology in areas outside of LANXESS' area of interest.
