Quantum information is an umbrella term used to describe such topics as quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and quantum information theory. These subjects have drawn intense interest from the scientific community for almost two decades now, both for their potential far reaching applications and for the deep and rich theory surrounding them. Canada has been positioning itself as a world leader at the dawn of this exciting "quantum age" -- and the Canadian mathematics community in particular has identified quantum information as a key research area in its recent long range plan. The research program of David Kribs goes directly to the heart of the matter, with the primary goal to investigate central problems in quantum information from a mathematical perspective. Working with other mathematicians and physicists for over a decade, he has sought to develop a firm mathematical foundation for studies in quantum information, and this will continue with the proposed research. His methodological approach is rooted in mathematics, and specifically in the operator theoretic disciplines. His research has focussed on quantum error correction and aspects of quantum information theory in recent years. These efforts will continue with the current proposal, along with new forays into subjects such as quantum cryptography. He will also continue his efforts in the training of highly qualified personnel, and at facilitating interaction between different scientific communities in these heavily interdisciplinary fields.
