项目摘要

Wireless communications and advanced sensors require advanced antennas of various types and associated microwave devices as well as fundamental analysis and rigorous modelling for the understanding of complex electromagnetic phenomena. The proposed research deals with fundamental problems in Electromagnetic Engineering with the main focus on antennas, microwave circuits, devices and their integration as well as associated electromagnetic wave phenomena. All are areas of vital importance to advancing information and communication technology (ICT) and innovations in sensor development. Our main objectives are to investigate and develop analytical and experimental techniques for developing innovative antenna systems, new materials for antennas and associated microwave circuits and antenna miniaturization, phased arrays and smart antennas. Research on the fundamentals of electromagnetics is revolutionary as it develops new analytical descriptions of e.m. phenomena and makes use of the knowledge gained over the last 60 years. It will enable scientists in dealing with important applications lying on the cutting edge of modern technological trends. This research is being conducted in the expectation that new applications in the 21st century will be challenged by increased density and complexity of urban areas which will result in rapid intensification of the use of electromagnetic devices. This gives rise to some of our objectives which also include mutual coupling effects and their modelling for MIMO antenna design, wave-object interaction and applications to electromagnetic compatibility and interference, telecommunications, near field communications and emerging areas such as wireless power transfer, medical applications and defence.
