The proposed research program consists of a set of projects dealing with the dynamics and control of a set of space systems, and a structural dynamics project. Many of these projects are directly related to space operations, but some are curiosity-driven. Specifically, the following projects will be undertaken.(i) Increase in space debris is a major concern for space mission operators. It is estimated that there are approximately 14,000 objects in space over the size of 10 cm in low earth orbits. This space debris must be removed for the safety of operating satellites. The proposed research program will examine two methods: (a) manipulator-assisted active removal of space debris, and (ii) use of an electrodynamic tether. Various dynamics and control issues associated with these two methods will be investigated.(ii) There is a growing interest in missions to asteroids. To have a successful mission, the dynamical behaviour of a spacecraft in the vicinity of an asteroid must be well-understood. The proposed project deals with the special case of dynamics of a spacecraft in the vicinity of binary asteroids, which are fairly numerous. Because of the non-uniform and time-varying gravitational field of asteroids, the spacecraft dynamics is likely to be very interesting and unconventional. This will be investigated.(iii) The space elevator is expected to become a low-cost alternative for space transportation. Dynamics associated with the deployment of the space elevator will be examined. The proposed project will also examine the dynamics and control issues associated with a partial space elevator.(iv) Study of nonlinear dynamics of shells subjected to internal / annular flows will be continued.
