Archer Daniels Midland is one of the world's largest agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, withmore than 32,000 employees serving customers in more than 160 countries. In Canada, the company has a totalof 42 facilities located in Alberta, Manitoba, Québec and Ontario; employing over 1000 people. The companyhas a global value chain that includes 428 crop procurement locations, 250 ingredient manufacturing facilities,38 innovation centers and the world's premier crop transportation network. ADM is making products for food,animal feed, industrial and energy uses.ADM has a wheat flour wet mill facility located in Candiac, Québec. This plant is processing Canadian wheatflour. To render the plant more competitive, the processing conditions will be optimized to allow the mill toprocess wheat flours having different compositions, and maybe extend the range of Canadian feedstock whichcould be processed in Candiac. In order to optimize the plant, a laboratory scale model of the plant will bereproduced. The flours which will have successfully passed through the laboratory model will be characterizedand compared to the flours which will have not successfully completed the run. This will allow engineers atMcGill to modify the operations conditions in function of the flours being processed.By optimizing the plant conditions, less expensive Canadian wheat flour may be used at the Candiac plant,which would also help the plant to be more competitive and purchase more Canadian wheat.
