Laser surgery represents a huge and profitable market growing at a rapid rate. Many lasers are now commonlyused for various medical procedures namely in general surgery, ophthalmology and aesthetics. To meet therequirements of eye surgery, Light-Matter Interaction Inc. has developed a laser system that produceshigh-energy picosecond pulses at a wavelength of 2.9 microns, near the absolute maximum absorption ofwater. This laser system has demonstrated its efficiency in meeting the most demanding applications inophthalmologic laser procedures. However, the laser system developed is based on an inefficient solid-statearchitecture, which results in a quite low overall efficiency that requires water-cooling to operate at the targetedenergy level for the eye surgery application. The goal of the current proposal is therefore to develop afiber-based amplifier system able to produce picosecond pulses near 2.9 microns with the targeted energy perpulse required to support demanding ophthalmologic laser procedures. The fiber-based system to be developedin collaboration with the COPL at Laval University will drastically change the company's current laser systemarchitecture with significant gains in compactness and efficiency.
