The ability to control polymer architecture via catalyst design has been a major driving force behind the successof polyolefins. Consequently, polymers made principally of ethylene and propylene now can be used in a broadrange of applications, from ultra-thin trash and produce bags, to car bumpers and they can supersede the use ofspecialty polymers in bullet proof jackets or in high modulus fibers. Precise control over architecture is a key toachieve highly desired rheological and mechanical properties.This proposal is the follow-up of an Engage proposal which was executed between May and November 2017.We want to prepare a model polyolefin using a very specific technique, called metathesis. The initial schemethat we had planned in the Engage proposal was only partly successful, and we need more time to finish thesynthesis and to send approximately 10 g of the model polymer to our industrial partner, NOVA Chemicals.They will evaluate the performance of the polymer in various mechanical and rheological assays, and compareit to commercial products. If successful, it might be envisaged that a longer collaboration be engaged betweenNova Chemicals and the scientists of Université de Sherbrooke to prepare such remarkable products byecononomically viable routes.
