The reliability- and risk-based corrosion assessment of unpiggable oil and gas pipelines is a challenging taskbecause such pipelines are inaccessible to inspection tools. Various methods including the samplingexcavation, hydrostatic pressure testing and above-ground survey techniques are commonly used to collectpartial information about the corrosion conditions of unpiggable pipelines. Therefore, there is a need fordeveloping a holistic approach that allows pipeline operators to effectively integrate data obtained fromdifferent sources to obtain the complete information about the corrosion condition and facilitate the reliabilityevaluation and risk-based integrity management of unpiggable corroding pipelines. The objective of theproposed project is to carry out exploratory investigations toward the development of such an approach. Theproposed project will employ the Bayesian methodologies for updating the density and sizes of corrosionfeatures on unpiggable pipelines based on data obtained from various sources. The research will be carried outin collaboration with the industry partner, JANA Corporation in Aurora, Ontario, and will train onepostdoctoral fellow for a duration of six months. The research outcome will facilitate the integritymanagement of unpiggable oil and gas pipelines and improve the safety, reliability, and economical viability ofthe vast oil and gas pipeline networks in Canada.
