Experimental investigation of controlled rocking cross-laminated timber walls

Canada's population is growing, leading to a need to intensify cities by building taller. At the same time,Canada's commitment to action on climate change necessitates minimizing the carbon footprint of buildingactivities. One of the most promising means of building both taller and greener is by using cross-laminatedtimber (CLT), which is expanding the reach of wood structures. Within this context, Guardian Structures isleading the way as one of the only Canadian producers of CLT.One of the most challenging aspects of designing taller buildings relates to the safety of these structures duringa severe earthquake. This project will investigate the innovative configuration of controlled rocking CLT walls,based on large-scale experimental testing to be conducted at McMaster's Applied Dynamics Laboratory. Theexperimental results will be used to better understand how to model the interface between a CLT wall and thefoundation, leading towards design procedures that will enable more resilient and economical tall woodbuildings.
