Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology has been widely used for both municipal and industrial wastewatertreatment all over the word. MBR technology has many advantages, such as a small footprint, higherproductivity and efficiency, low energy, complete retention of biomass, superior quality of effluent, ascompared to conventional activated sludge processes. However, membrane fouling and biomass foaming havebeen problematic issues associated with the MBR systems and limit its wide application. An improvedfundamental understanding of foaming and membrane fouling will enhance the performance of MBRs and savecosts. The proposed study will focus on the identification of causes and its control of foaming issues in MBRsoperated at a mining site (Goldcorp Inc.) in Northwestern Ontario. The success of the proposed study will helpsolve the foaming issues associated with MBRs used in not only the mining sites but also other industriallocations and help protect water environment.
