We plan to conduct a joint research study with Waterloo Electroplating & Metal Finishing Inc. to investigatethe efficiency of proposed on-site filtration system to reduce chemical pollution from metal finishing effluents.Initially, we will produce the sorbent material, i.e. biochar, from different biomass materials (agricultural andwood feedstocks). To select the best sorbing material, we will perform sorption test for heavy metalscommonly found in the metal finishing effluents. Based on the performance of each type of the sorbingmaterial, we will assess the removal efficiency to select the best material. Results will form the basis for thedesign of low cost filter to reduce the contamination of industrial effluents in the Canadian environment.
