Over the past 25 years, Canada has emerged as one of the world's largest exporters of lentils accounting forapproximately 50% in 2008. Saskatchewan is the primary lentil producer in Canada. Loveland ProductsCanada Inc. offers its patented formulation of the plant growth hormones, auxin and cytokinin, called Radiate®for Canadian lentil crop growers. Radiate is not only a powerful root stimulator for lentil plants but alsoenhances the plant's ability to produce more of these essential root growth hormones. Radiate provides theunique balance of these essential plant hormones which consistently supports maximum root growth and plantperformance, including lentil seed yield. Radiate is typically applied to lentil plants in combination with eithera herbicide or a herbicide in combination with a fungicide. Herbicide and fungicide treatments may alsocontribute to the shift of balance in auxin and cytokinin levels in lentil plants. Thus, Loveland is interested toevaluate the potential interactive effects of Radiate with herbicide and fungicide treatments on the natural auxinand cytokinin levels of lentil seeds. This knowledge may help Loveland improve their Radiate formulation tooptimize its effect on lentil seed yield. It is also important to evaluate and document the effects of Radiate onthe endogenous levels of the naturally occurring plant hormones, auxin and cytokinin, in field-grown lentilseeds.
