A Toronto-based company, Rna Diagnostics, has developed a test that determines whether chemotherapy isworking. The test is based upon the level of RNA disruption in a tumour sample, and its computationalanalysis. RNA is copied from DNA, and increased RNA can help to cause tumour growth in cancer. RNAdecay is a signal that chemotherapy is working and that tumour cells are dying. However, Rna Diagnosticswould like to understand the pathways that cause RNA decay, and whether different levels of RNA disruptionmean different drug effects or outcome.Dr. Sarah Sabatinos (Ryerson University, Toronto) will use yeast cellsto test how RNA disruption happens after drug treatment. The Sabatinos lab will use microscopy to understandhow RNA disruption happens, and test whether additional marks of chemotherapy effectiveness are present.Our combined goal is to make Rna Diagnostics' tool better able to predict tumour cell death, and work earlierafter drug is given. This work is important to promote training and improve diagnostics and predictivecomputational tools in Canada.
