Fertilization responses at the stand-level have been quantified for western redcedar and western hemlockplantations in coastal British Columbia (BC). However, the routinely applied growth and yield models operateat the tree-level and understanding of tree-level responses to fertilization treatments in coastal BC is limited.With a renewed interest in fertilization responses for carbon sequestration and storage, forest industry in BCfaces the challenge to better understand tree-level responses to fertilization treatments in order to refine theirforest fertilization applications. This project will use 30 years of re-measurement data from long-termsilvicultural trials in the Salal Cedar Hemlock Integrated Research Program from Northern Vancouver Island,BC, to quantify the tree-level responses to nitrogen fertilization for both western hemlock and western redcedarin three planting densities (500, 1500, 2055 stems/ha). The analysis performed in this project will lay thegroundwork for building a TASS fertilization module for coastal BC. Ultimately, the work will allow BC forestindustry to refine their fertilization management applications to further increase their timber production andimprove their carbon sequestration strategies. The proposed approach can then be adapted to other tree speciesand forest types in BC and across Canada.
