Computational approaches for optimization of engineering systems need to be developed further to make themsuitable for initial design where most of the project cost is defined. Weight optimization is traditionally veryimportant in structural engineering. Weight-optimal design features structural stresses and other constraints onthe permissible limit. Drawing on this fact, this project attempts to see if searching for optimal designs alongthe border of permissible design space can accelerate the search for optimal structural typologies. This hasshown to reduce computational time in optimization of structural scantlings. Genetic algorithm is used as anoptimizer, in order to deal with discrete nature of the problem and to avoid local pitfalls. Manufacturingrequirements are considered.
