Zaber Technologies's business is founded on the development and manufacture of precision positioning devicesused in a wide variety of applications and markets including photonics and optics, life sciences, microscopy,and industrial automation. In an effort to enhance their product lines, Zaber would like to create a linear stagewith an embedded laser based interferometer to provide a much higher level of accuracy and precision.Because no commercially viable laser source exists for this application, this research proposal is aimed atinvestigating the creation of a new special-purpose laser designed for this application. Specifically, we willdesign a diode pumped solid state laser, commission its fabrication, and test the final product characterizing itssuitability for Zaber's application. This will include a full characterization of the spectral output, frequencystability, tunability, reliability and reproducibility.
