One of the many strategies for mitigating the effects of anthropogenic CO2 is carbon capture and conversion, inparticular to high value chemicals. One strategy for incorporation of CO2 is reactivity with functionalizedspecies such as epoxides. Another is electrochemical conversion. An important milestone in this field wouldbe to use electrochemical CO2 conversion in conjunction with catalysis to form new green solvents. We canuse bio-derived epoxides to render this a truly sustainable process.Kemetco Research is a B.C.-based private sector integrated science, technology and innovation company.Their core interests are on specialty analytical chemistry, chemical processes, and extractive metallurgy with afocus on green technologies. They focus on the demand for process technologies that are both efficient andenvironmentally acceptable and one of their ongoing projects is electrochemical reduction of CO2. We willwork with Kemetco to develop a methodology to generate green cyclic carbonate solvents from CO2. Thisproject has the potential to have a significant impact in the carbon mitigation measures in this industry, creatingvalue-added product from waste.
